Spend time with them in the lab if it is possible and challenge yourself intellectually by having a question or two every time that you can debate over. In addition, you can choose to join a group of your fellow comrades who are pursuing a similar degree and have study and brain storming sessions together.
That said, befriend the library. Find the hidden treasures in books and in your quest answer questions such as why medicine was practiced in a certain way long time ago and why and how it has changed to how it is being practiced today. Gauge the good and bad and make it a habit to study with a notebook where you can always put down your findings.

The answer to that is, yes it can! Look up new information on the internet and relate it to what you are learning in class. Learn of new groundbreaking inventions in your field and what they mean to the industry.
